Program Notes

A Simple Song unfolds in four connected sections that explore lyricism, reflection, and transformation.

The opening, The Song, presents a lyrical melody supported by lush, jazz-inflected harmonies, gradually intensifying toward a climax that subtly hints at an R&B flavor. This leads into a reflective cadenza, where the music turns inward and momentarily suspends forward motion.

The third section, The Dance, begins as an awkward, off-balance gesture in an asymmetrical meter, as if searching for its footing. Suddenly, this instability gives way to a grounded waltz, allowing the music to settle and breathe. In the final recap, material from the opening returns, transformed by the journey of the work, bringing the piece to a quiet and introspective close.
